Hecale

A Portal For Writers

Submission Guidelines for the Words Directory

Submissions are accepted year-round and published on a rolling basis.

Send 1-3 poems or pieces of flash fiction or single short story. A poem should not far exceed forty lines in length, flash fiction should not exceed 1000 words
(though if sending a couple, much less preferred) & for short stories under 2500 is desirable. A title on all submissions is mandatory. The piece can be submitted in the body of the email or attached as a Microsoft Word or Open Office document.

We reserve the right to make minor editorial changes to submissions, including grammar, punctuation and spelling (though work riddled with such is likely to receive short shrift). No major alterations to form or content will take place without prior consultation with the author.

Each submission must be accompanied by a short (30-100 words) third person biography/blurb/quotation and an image attached for your profile (jpeg or gif). When selecting an image, bear in mind it will be scaled to adhere with our format.

Performance poets who submit to the directory can optionally include audio recordings (mp3 only at this point) to be hosted alongside the written version.

If you maintain a personal site or have work elsewhere online, include links by all means. The aim of the directory is to showcase talents not horde them. HECALE has no prejudice regarding poetry or prose previously published though the references are required.

Copyright remains yours and we will acknowledge this in the copyright line which appears on your work.

Please do not follow up submissions with enquiries or further samples. Should your work be rejected, it is because we do not consider it conforming to the type of writing we wish to promote, not a judgement on its literary qualities.
We do not publish genre fiction (unless fabulously innovative) or work that we regard as unduly conventional or verbose; the further your work veers from the well-trodden path the more likely it will find a home here. Remember Hecale is a spotlight for your talents and strive to submit writing that allows those talents to shine.

Email poetry submissions to poetry@hecale.com and fiction submissions to fiction@hecale.com.

Submission Guidelines for the Image Gallery

Submissions accepted year-round.

The Gallery is now open to hosting illustrations, paintings and photography. If you wish to display work, email your submission to gallery@hecale.com, including the words 'Gallery Submission' in the subject line. Attach images as jpeg or gif.

Work will be hosted on individual pages and include any submitted links to other sites.

Copyright will remain yours
and we will acknowledge this in the copyright line which appears on your work.

Previously published work is acceptable.

Submission Guidelines for the ANTHOLOGY

A print journal, the Anthology will be published September/October 2008, comprising original poetry, flash fiction, short stories and artwork.

Email all verse or prose submissions to anthology@hecale.com in Word or Open Office formats. Art submissions should be attached as jpeg, gif or png. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable though do contact us should your work be accepted elsewhere.

For short stories (maximum length roughly 3000 words) send one piece only, otherwise 1-3 pieces are fine. The deadline for submissions is Monday June 30th and once the final decisions made, all those who submitted will be contacted.

As with Directory submissions, Hecale reserves the right to make minor editorial changes to submissions, including grammar, punctuation and spelling. Again, no major alterations to form or content will take place without prior consultation with the author.

The Anthology is not themed. We favour the sharp, the flashing, the rapid, the searing. If you enjoy what's on the site, chances are we have something in common, so take a look around before committing your creation to our care. The key difference between site submissions and submissions for the print journal is 'original'. Whereas previously published works are happily accommodated on the website, all print entries must be unpublished.

Hecale is a non-profit organisation. If (and why not?) you're looking for payment for your efforts, we're not for you. Should the Anthology do more than break even, any surplus will be donated to the Women in Literacy Initiative run by ProLiteracy Worldwide.

For publication, Hecale acquires First British Serial Rights. After publication, rights revert to the author.
